Dick has been admitted into the hospital with Congestive Heart Failure
Great news today - Dad gets to go home!!!! Not sure what time that will be but it will be today.

His levels are all going in the correct direction, his heart is good, and he is ''running'' around the ''track'' without much, if any, trouble. The ''track'' is the corridors around the nurses station - but ''track'' sounds better. :)

This is a welcome blessing for all to get out of the confines of the hospital and to breathe fresh air again.

We all agree the the doctors and staff at Genesis East were wonderful and we couldn't have asked for much more! We don't want any of you to have to go there but if you do you will be in GREAT hands.

Keep those thoughts and prayers (and comments) coming - they are working miracles!

Dad is doing better every day and making the progress that the doctors want to see.

The kidney doctor came in this morning and told us that his creatine level have plateaued at 3.5 and should be on there way down. If the creatine goes down tomorrow there is a good chance he will be able to go home. His blood count is low so they are going to give him 2 units of blood later today.

I want to again thank you all for your thoughts and prayers - it looks like they are working!

We came in Friday Morning for the big surgery, Quadruple bypass to relieve the blockage in the arteries around the heart.  Things were sidelined when Dad’s creatine levels didn’t want to cooperate. 2.73. Dr. Proctor said we need that number down and she didn’t feel comfortable that morning. The patriarch also had a lower than acceptable platelet count so we retired to an inpatient room with his entourage of wife, 5 children, a future daughter-in-law, a younger brother and a nephew.

The stress was evident in all of our eyes, but the morning also brought laughter, hugs, kisses, stories from old and long embraces with all in the room.

The staff of nurses, doctors and attendants for the hospital were evident all day. In the first hour we were visited by the kidney dr. and the hospital attending doctor. The thoughts of doing the bypass was expressed again, due to the fact that the creatine was not going to go down. The caveat was that this surgery would more than likely hurt the kidneys and place Dick on dialysis at least temporarily and possibly permanently.

Then, Dr. Farkus, a partner to Dr Proctor, came in and expressed her opinion. “Dick, if you were my father, I would recommend against the bypass.” That was all Dad had to hear.

So now we were placed with a new question. What do we do now? The answer was to come soon. “Stents”. The question was when?  The matriarch let it be known often, whatever was going to happen, it was going to be decided today.

In the first 7 hours, we had seen 6 doctors. Something quite unheard of in our world. I attest to the quick and thoughtful response, to more family and friends praying and speaking up when doctors came into the room and behind the scenes. Thank you. We cannot say that enough.

Again, our prayers were answered. Dr Gimble came and proceeded to render his opinion. He had consulted with Dr. Robken, a world-renowned surgeon with over 40 years of experience. The procedure would be complicated, but if a person required the surgery, Robken was the man for the challenge. That challenge would be accepted and completed in the next 12 hours.

The surgery was set for 7pm, but an emergency procedure placed a delay. Dr. Robken’s talents were needed by another.

At 10:48 pm, a nurse came to the door, it was time. The family retreated to the waiting room and continued their stories and jabs at Roy. Then the snoring symphonies began about 1am. Then at 1:37 am the phone call came. Dad was out of surgery…the verdict?

Richard Azinger Sr. had come through the surgery perfectly. The sighs and stress faded, smiles and hugs were exchanged.

Soon the patient room was filled again. Now the group could go to bed and sleep well knowing that Dick was sleeping well also.

Dad’s creatine level was still at 2.7 but the kidney Dr was happy with that – it didn’t go up. Unfortunately, that meant Dad had to stay in the hospital for another day. Saturday was a day of recovery with many visitors and again…lots of stories, jabs and laughter.

Today, we are waiting for the doctors to come in for some more tests. We will keep you informed of his progress in future posts.

Thank you again for your prayers.

Hello All,

Dad had an exploratory angiogram yesterday where they found 4 blockages that are between 50%-90% blocked in the arteries around his heart. These arteries provide oxygen to the heart.

He is going to have a few more tests done before a January 2nd meeting with Dr. Proctor, MD (Cardiac & Thoracic Surgeon) where they will determine the which one of two procedures to do to fix the blockage. They will be either a bypass surgery or to put in stints. They are leaning toward the bypass surgery but his creatinine will have to go down and his platelets have to go up.

It was a long day at the hospital yesterday. He went in at 10am and got home around 9pm. He slept well last night and is enjoying his crossword puzzle as I write this.

Thanks again for all your thoughts and prayers and we will keep you informed of any changes.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year - Mary Ann wishes next year will be better!
Hello!  All,

It was so good to get home on Friday somewhere around 5:00 PM.  MY cardiologist had thought he would get around to see me sometime in the morning, but he was one busy, busy, busy guy and didn’t release me until nearly 4:00 PM.  At any rate, it has been good to be back in our own bed — hospital beds just AIN’T comfy…

It has been most humbling to receive posts from so many relatives.  Believe me, I always knew that my kids and relatives were special people, B-U-T… you all have made this old man feel extra special.  Thank you.  Thank you.  Thank you.  Things appear to be going well.  I’m still scheduled for an Angiogram on December 19.  We’ll try to keep you informed of any updates.

Again…  Thanks for all of your love and kind words and prayers.  You have made two old people quite happy.

Love to you all
Mary Ann & Dick

Dad just called me and he is going home!!!

Sorry for no post yesterday but by the time all the doctors where in it was pretty late and not much news.

Yesterday Dad's creatinine went from 2.8 down to 2.49. Today it went down to 2.4. Steady progress!

The doctors also told him that they will probably keep is appointment on the 19th for the angiogram.

Thank you for all the well wishing and prayers - I know it lifted Dad's spirits higher than you can imagine just knowing you are all on his side.

I will post again every few days to let  you know how he is progressing.

Dad was suffering from extreme loss of breath Monday morning (12/3) so he called the doctor who told him just to go to the emergency room. When admitted they also noticed he had a lot of fluid in his legs so they immediately transported him to Genesis East in Davenport with a diagnosis of Congestive Heart Failure along with his kidney not working well enough to remove the fluid from his body. They put him on fluid pills to help remove the fluid from his legs and the rest of his body. Dad had an appointment scheduled on December 19th for an angiogram to figure out why his heart was not working properly. He could possibly need a pacemaker, or a valve might not be closing properly for the blood to be pushed through the body well enough.

Tuesday (12/4): The fluid pills seemed to be working well as his legs looked better and his breathing was much better. He was able to get up and walk around with the nurses. The Nephrologist - Dr. M. Walid Al Sheikha (Kidney Dr) came in early afternoon and told us that they needed to get the kidney functioning better before they could do the angiogram. The Cardiologist - Dr. Edmund Coyne came in later in the evening and told Mom & Dad that he would wait until Dr. Al Sheikha gave the approval to do the angiogram. In order for that to happen Dad's creatinine levels and his fluid levels would have to be balanced.

Wednesday morning (12/5): Dr Al Sheikha came in and said Dad's creatinine level went up a little and instead of doing the angiogram they might do a stress test today. This would get a baseline for his heart to help determine when he would be ready for the angiogram.

Wednesday Afternoon: Dr. Coyne came in the afternoon and told them that Dad's creatinine level was at 2.8 and needed to be at, or below, 2.8 in order for them to proceed with the angiogram.

This is absolutely the best news! Take care of yourself and let those that love you take care of you!! That doesn’t mean you get to win all the card games! Love you all
